May has flown by!

We are already at the end of the spring season! I thoroughly enjoyed going off to the 3 day events in May, firstly Houghton CCI* with Billy. He was such a good boy doing a PB in the dressage, clear in the time XC, but sadly one SJ down made us slip rapidly from 3rd to 13th! (85 starters)..but overall am very happy with his progress this spring.

Bobby

I took Bobby and Joey out to Tattersalls in Ireland the following week for their first CCI*. It is such a fun event, made even better by the perfect going, and the lovely group of people who came out to help and support. Both horses finished on their dressage scores – neither did exceptional tests but jumped lovely double clears, Bobby finishing 5th and Joey 16th (50 starters). They are now having a couple of weeks well deserved holiday. I would hope they will progress this autumn up to CIC** level with a possible CCI** at the end of the season.

Em has had both highs and lows this last month, she is very excited to be long listed for the Young Rider Europeans Champs with Zara, which are at Millstreet in Ireland mid July.

During this short break the horses have their 6 monthly ‘flu boosters. They are out day and night, except if they are getting too fat they come in for either the night or day to curb their waistline! The only food they have is  half a scoop of Baileys balancer. I love them to have no rugs on at all if possible, but if the flies are around they have Bucas flysheets on, or if it is rainy they wear a thin Bucas waterproof rug.

Despite spraying the docks early this year they seem to be popping up everywhere, so am enjoying going round the paddocks with my Logic topper making it all look tidy.

The 5 in foal mares are doing well with the first 2 due at the beginning of July. They all have had a course of 3 herpes injections, and they have a tetanus injection 1 month before their due date to give the foal a bit of immunity.

I had a lovely couple of days with Liberty Trails on Dartmoor. I was asked to host a 2 day ride, and it was absolutely glorious weather making the scenery even more beautiful and breathtaking. I was spoilt with a couple of nights with the guests in the superb Bovey Castle Hotel where David joined me, what a treat.

David and I have a few days away in Spain with some good friends before preparing all the horses for the…dare I say it…autumn season!!

Best wishes,

Mary King

  1. Can’t believe how fast the year is going! Wonderful to hear how the youngsters are doing – especially Billy! Everything is crossed for Em! Xx
